Since moving to Virginia, I have had sort of a reckoning with the fall & winter seasons. Now that the weather’s getting colder, and the days are getting shorter (so they say)- I’ve realized even more so than before that I’m definitely more of a spring and summer person. That’s not to say I would jump back into a Texas summer right now if I had the chance. I actually don’t think it’s related to weather at all. I have been loving my 30-40 degree runs (through beautiful fall foliage no less). I think it more so has to do with my homebody nature and tendency for reclusiveness. The warmer seasons invite more frolic and play, especially in outdoor spaces, so creating joy in my everyday life comes more easily. To me, spring has also always symbolized a kind of rebirth. Something to look forward to, and a sign that good days are coming. Fall has sort of the opposite effect. I think this is also why my caveat here is that I love New Years. I’ve always loved New Years. Whether I have a resolution or not, it’s always been exciting to me to be able to “start fresh,” dream about the coming year, and reflect on the past.
Anyway, my goal for the rest of the year is to soak up all the crisp running I can, enjoy time with my friends and family (whether we’re inside or outside), and remember that life is supposed to have seasons. And if it ever feels too dark, to know that spring will come again.
What’s your favorite time of year?
